The processes in the brain to achieve real presence can be initiated through several pathways, suffering is one. I think, however, one must get comfortable enough sitting with the emotions involved with suffering to use it well. It's uncomfortable, but discomfort is what shifts the mental pathways from status quo allowing for presence.
